Joop Varekamp and Ellen Thomas are the authors of three chapters included in a reference volume for Long Island Sound. The book, Long Island Sound: Prospects for the Urban Sea, is published by Springer in 2013. Varekamp is the Harold T. Stearns Professor of Earth Science, professor of earth and environmental sciences, professor of environmental studies. Thomas is research professor of earth and environmental sciences. Varekamp co-authored a chapter titled "Metals, Organic Compounds and Nutrients in Long Island Sound: Sources, Magnitudes, Trends and Impacts," and another chapter titled "The Physical Oceanography of Long Island Sound." Rick Gilberg '74, P'16, P'14 describes his Wesleyan education as a "game-changer." The son of working-class parents who never attended college, Gilberg was able to attend Wesleyan only with the support of a generous financial aid package. A religion major in the College of Letters, he says the opportunity enabled him to discover sides of himself he never knew existed. As part of Wesleyan's Giving Tuesday celebration, members of the Class of 2014 attended the semi-formal Senior Class Reception Dec. 3 in Beckham Hall. Seniors enjoyed live entertainment, listened to remarks by alumni, and learned about the Seniors of Wesleyan Annual Gift (SWAG). A tradition that dates back nearly 20 years, SWAG allows graduating seniors the opportunity to give back to Wesleyan and set the standard for joining the Wesleyan community of alumni. More than 100 students made presentations at the Quantitative Analysis Center Research Poster Session Dec. 6 in Beckham Hall. The poster session served as the students' QAC 201 final exam. The event provides students with the opportunity to share the fruits of their work with others. Several Wesleyan faculty and alumni evaluated the students' poster presentations. The Quantitative Analysis Center at Wesleyan has been developing an introductory course aimed at attracting a larger number of students to opportunities in the area of data analysis and applied statistics.
