The College of the Environment hosted its annual Pumpkin Festival Oct. 5 at Long Lane Farm. Long Lane Farm Club members offered tours of the farm and sold apples, pumpkins and baked goods. Guests attended a small vendor market while listening to the tunes of student and faculty/staff bands. Bon Appetit and the COE provided complimentary veggie burgers and cider. Wesleyan celebrated the women of Wesleyan at “Women in STEM Day” Oct. 11 and at “Campus Transformation Through Co-Education” Oct. 12. During “Women in STEM Day” female students considering careers in science, technology, engineering and math had the opportunity to network and participate in seminars with alumni and faculty. The event's keynote speaker (and self-described geek ) was Noirin Plunkett. During the "Campus Transformation" event, Shelia Tobias led a daylong event including a panel discussion with female change agents from the 1970s and discussions with alumni and faculty about campus culture of the late 1960s and early 1970s. On Oct. 1, the Office of Student Affairs hosted a “First-Year Dinner with President Roth.” The event gave first-year students living in Clark Hall and Bennet Hall an opportunity to visit with President Roth, staff and their fellow residents. Students dined in the Daniel Family Commons. President Roth met with students living in the Butterfield Residences, Foss Hill, 200 Church and 156 High earlier this year. Wesleyan students, staff, faculty, friends, families and neighbors in the Middletown community enjoyed a plethora of activities at Middletown Day, held Sept. 21 on campus. The afternoon of games, live music, poster-making and balloon art, led up to the first night football game in the NESCAC, as the Cardinals faced the Tufts University Jumbos in the season’s first contest. The Wesleyan community celebrated the eat-local movement on Eat Local Challenge Day Sept. 24. Wesleyan's Dining Services and several local vendors provided meals made entirely from local ingredients harvested within 150 miles of the university. The menu included New England clam chowder, fried haddock and fresh cut french fries, whole spit roast pig with cranberry chutney, New England clam bake with steamer clams, corn and potatoes, vegan seitan hash, salad made from Long Lane Farm produce, wood fired pizza, blueberry and strawberry crisp, ice cream, apple cider, coffee and soda. THE MASH, inspired by Fete de la Musique, also known as World Music Day, highlights the student music scene at Wesleyan. The event, which took place on Sept. 6 on multiple stages around campus, provided students with the both the opportunity to listen to some of Wesleyan's most popular faculty and student bands, and to sign up and play for the audiences themselves.
