The intimate faculty-student presentation revealed ground-breaking research on the Stanley Milgram "shock" obedience experiment, led by Jill Morawski, the Wilbur Fisk Osborne Professor of Psychology, professor of science in society, professor of feminist, gender and sexuality studies, and assistants Ethan Hoffman ’14 and Nick Myerberg ’14. Benjamin TraversOn Monday, April 23, Wesleyan will receive a visit from Reverend Billy (Bill Talen), the anti-consumerism activist and performance artist, who has tried to “exorcise” so many Starbucks cash registers, he’s been banned from the coffee shop chain. He will speak at 7 p.m. in Memorial Chapel. The event is free and open to the public. Talen is best known as the subject of the 2007 documentary, What Would Jesus Buy?, produced by Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Morgan Spurlok and directed by Sundance Film Festival Award-winner Rob VanAlkemade. Wesleyan is pleased to announce that during its most recent review, the Board awarded tenure to four faculty effective July 1, 2011. Ulrich Plass, associate professor of German studies, joined the Wesleyan faculty in 2004 as assistant professor. Plass is a specialist in German literature, literary criticism, and critical theory, with a particular focus on the works of the German philosopher Theodor Adorno. Jeremy Zwelling, director of Jewish and Israel Studies Certificate Program, associate professor of religion, is retiring from Wesleyan after 43 years. Zwelling came to Wesleyan’s Religion Department to teach a range of courses in Jewish studies in 1967. He established Wesleyan’s Program in Israel Studies, and helped create Wesleyan’s Certificate Program in Jewish and Israel Studies. Zwelling received a bachelor’s degree in religion from Columbia University and a bachelor’s degree in Hebrew literature from the Jewish Theological Seminary. Mary-Jane Rubenstein, assistant professor of religion, will teach Modern Christian Thought and the Problem of Evil during the fall semester.
