The Wesleyan volleyball team won its third consecutive Little Three title outright as the 19th-ranked Cardinals defeated archrival Williams College Oct. 25 in Silloway Gymnasium by scores of 25-17, 25-23, 25-22. Little Three Championships are declared when a varsity team from Wesleyan, Williams, and Amherst defeats the other two rivals. The fierce competition among the schools dates back to at least 1910. Wesleyan's volleyball team won its second consecutive Little Three Championship Sept. 30 following a 3-0 sweep over archrival Amherst College on the road. The Cardinals (10-2) remain perfect in NESCAC play with a 5-0 mark. Shortly after, they saw their 10-match win streak come to an end as they fell to non-conference foe Endicott College, 3-1. Although Williams College ultimately won the Little Three title, the Cardinals had four runners place in the top 10 as they finished in second place, ahead of Amherst College. The "Little Three" schools — Wesleyan, Amherst and Williams — first formally banded together in 1899 as the Triangular League. The Wesleyan Men’s Rugby Team, which recently celebrated its 50th anniversary, played Trinity College on Oct. 30 at the Long Lane field. The team, also known as the Wesleyan “Old Methodist” Rugby Football Club, now plays in a recognized New England Rugby Football Union league including the Little 3, Trinity and Connecticut College, and they can compete for both New England and National titles. Wesleyan students, parents, alumni and friends who attended Homecoming/Family Weekend festivities witnessed a historic moment Nov. 2, when the Cardinals claimed the Little Three football title for the first time in 43 years. The Little Three is a rivalry between Wesleyan, Williams College and Amherst College, which dates to the late 19th century. The Cardinals defeated Amherst 20-14 on Oct. 19, and the 16-14 Homecoming victory against Williams secured them the 2013 title and a 7-0 record.
