Rev. Billy Preaches on Anti-Consumerism

Reverend Billy (Bill Talen), anti-consumerism activist and performance artist, "preached" in Memorial Chapel on April 23. Mary-Jane Rubenstein, associate professor of religion, is teaching Talen’s work in her Introduction to the Study of Religion course, as part of a unit on capitalism and some of its counter-movements as late-modern religious expressions.

Wellness Tips, Vendors at Cardinal Fit Kick-Off

Human Resources hosted a Wellness Program Kick-Off event for faculty and staff May 3 in the Freeman Athletic Center. Participants learned about the Wesleyan Incentive Points Program, entered their name in a raffle, got a free chair massage and met representatives from more than a dozen vendors.

The Recess at Wesleyan Program welcomed 100 students from a local intermediate school who were rewarded for exemplary behavior with a midday recess excursion to Wesleyan’s Bacon Field House. Dozens of university student athletes hosted the children in a variety of play activities including basketball, kickball and capture the flag. Recess at WES is an ongoing partnership with regular visits by student athletes to the Intermediate school. It is supported by the Wesleyan Athletics Advantage Program, which integrates community service into the undergraduate student athlete experience.

Video Feature on Wesleyan Students Addressing Global Issues

Rachel Levenson ’12, saw a need for an elevated, intellectual based conversation on how to evaluate programs, scale up effective programs, and allocate funds in a way that will have the biggest positive impact. Levenson designed The Forum For International Development to create a space at Wesleyan for that discussion so people could learn from each other as well as from speakers that Wesleyan Students brought in from all over the country.

ENVS Class Makes Scientific, Artistic Inquiry of Gulf Oil Spill

Last summer, Wesleyan students journeyed to the Louisiana Gulf Coast as part of their College of the Environment class, ENVS 380, a scientific and artistic inquiry into the effects of the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill.  The class was led by Barry Chernoff, the Robert Schumann Professor of Environmental Studies and Chair of the Environmental Studies Program.

Wesleyan Co-Sponsors Inaugural New Years Eve Event in Middletown

The City of Middletown hosted its first Middnight On Main New Year’s Celebration on Dec. 31. The event, which was co-sponsored by Wesleyan, drew more than 10,000 midnight revelers of all ages from the Middletown community and surrounding region. Food, fun, live performance art, and fireworks created bright memories for all. The event also included a jazz piano performance by Wesleyan’s Jazz Ensemble coach Noah Baerman and a performance by SteveSongs’ Steve Roslonek ’93. Middnight on Main is featured in the video below:
