Twenty-three colleges and universities in New England, including Wesleyan, have joined an EPA effort to cut the amount of food that goes to waste. This doubles the participation of EPA’s Food Recovery Challenge in 2013, since 11 New England colleges and universities were already participating in the challenge. In 2011, these schools recovered a total of 4,538 tons of food. The Wesleyan and local community participated in "MiddletownRemix: Hear More, See More," a festival of art and sound, on May 11 in downtown Middletown. After a year of exploring, sharing, and remixing the sounds of Middletown on the MiddletownRemix website, event attendees celebrated the city's acoustic identity at the festival, which featured four commissioned world premieres, three live DJ sets, two art/sound installations, a laptop orchestra, food trucks, graffiti art, a gallery walk and a flash mob. Students enrolled in the "Improvisational Forms" dance course performed May 6 and May 8 at various locations, and on various objects, around campus. The class is designed to explore different approaches to dance improvisation. Students learn to expand movement vocabulary, increase compositional awareness, develop their creative thinking and observational skills, and sharpen their performance presence.
