On a recent broadcast of the BBC World Service, Erica Chenoweth, assistant professor of government, discusses the success rate of nonviolent uprisings versus armed uprisings worldwide since 1900, which is the subject of her upcoming book, Why Civil Resistance Works. Her findings indicate that nonviolent uprisings are successful more than 30% of the time, even when they are undertaken against oppressive governments.
