73 Student-Athletes Receive NESCAC All-Academic Honors

The Wesleyan University winter athletic teams put a total of 73 student-athletes on the 2019 NESCAC Winter All-Academic Team, while eight Cardinals earned All-Sportsmanship honors as announced by the conference.

In order to earn a spot on the All-Academic Team, a student-athlete must have reached sophomore academic standing and be a varsity letter winner with a minimum GPA of 3.50 or equivalent on a 4.0 scale. Transfer students are eligible as long as they have completed at least one year of coursework at the institution.

The All-Sportsmanship Team is comprised of one student-athlete from each of the NESCAC schools for each sport the conference sponsors, as 85 student-athletes were recognized. Antonio (women's swimming & diving), Tara Berger '19 (women's basketball) and Kevin McDonald '20 (men's basketball) earned the accolade for the second time in their careers.

Middlebury ranked first in the conference with 122 athletes on the All-Academic list, while Williams ranked second with 115 and Amherst was third with 111 athletes.

Sophia Antonio ’19 (women’s swimming & diving) was named to the All-Academic Team for the third time and was also on the All-NESCAC squad. Additionally, there were 25 other individuals making their third appearance on the All-Academic Team. Five additional individuals were named to both the All-Academic Team and earned All-NESCAC laurels this season: Jordan Bonner ’19 (men’s basketball), Chad Malinowski ’19 (men’s ice hockey), Grace Middleton ’20 (women’s swimming & diving), Tim Sestak ’20 (men’s ice hockey), and Maela Whitcomb ’19 (women’s swimming & diving).

The other five award-winners were Andy Espinoza ’19 (men’s ice hockey), Sarah Goss ’19 (women’s ice hockey), Kevin Le ’19 (men’s squash), Ali Imperiale ’19 (women’s squash), and Max Wimer ’19 (men’s swimming & diving).
