All NewsAstronomy Students Speak at KNAC Research Symposium Olivia DrakeNovember 8, 20133minWesleyan astronomy students traveled to Vassar College Oct. 26-27 for the 24th Annual Undergraduate Research Symposium sponsored by the Keck Northeast Astronomy Consortium. KNAC is a group of eight colleges in New Jersey, New York and New England that have collaborated for decades to bring enhanced summer research opportunities to their students. Pictured are the 85 students and faculty who attended the conference. Jesse Tarnas ’16 spoke on the subject “Searching for Planets around White Dwarf Stars,” based on his research with Seth Redfield, assistant professor of astronomy. Trevor Dorn-Wallenstein ’15 presented a talk titled “X-ray Fibrillation in the Heart of NGC 4395,” based on work he is pursuing at Wesleyan under the direction of Ed Moran, associate professor of astronomy, and Roy Kilgard, research assistant professor of astronomy. Several students spoke at the KNAC Symposium. Also attending the conference were students Suwun Suwunnarat ’15, Avram Stein ’17, Girish Duvvurl ’17, Maia Nelles-Sager ’17, Julian Dann ’17 and Simon Wright ’17, as well as Professors William Herbst, the John Monroe Van Vleck Professor of Astronomy, chair of the Astronomy Department; Meredith Hughes, assistant professor of astronomy; Roy Kilgard and Seth Redfield.
