The Wesleyan baseball diamond on Andrus Field was named in honor of Jim Dresser ’63, P’93 during a ceremony May 1. Six generations of Dresser’s family has coached, played, or watched games on “Dresser Diamond.” Baseball began at Wesleyan – and on this ground – in 1865. Two years earlier, Dresser’s great-grandfather, James Cooke Van Benschoten, arrived at Wesleyan to teach classics, which he did for almost 40 years. He named the team “the Agallians.” (more…)
Adjunct professor of music Angel Gil-Ordóñez's Post-Classical Ensemble was mentioned in the April 20th edition of The New York Times for performing in Falla and Flamenco at the Brooklyn Academy of Music April 17. The orchestra, paired with a Spanish pianist, performed “a muted by graceful account,” of “Nights in the Gardens of Spain," a tour of Spanish music "that touches not only on the Gypsy influences that crystallized as flamenco but on Moorish influences as well," according to the article. Four Wesleyan students helped create a new video for Grammy-nominated hip-hop artists Nappy Roots. The video for the song “P.O.N.” was directed by Bill Kirstein ’10 and Ethan Berger ’10. Stefan Weinberger ’10 was the director of photography. The video was produced by Ram Sivalingam ‘10, Adam Paulsen ’10 and Drae Jackson of Drae Jackson Films. Computer Science students Sam DeFabbia-Kane '11, Juan Pablo Mendoza '10, and Foster Nichols '10 all presented posters on their current research at this year's regional conference of the Consortium for Computing Sciences in Colleges, which was held at the University of Hartford April 16-17. DeFabbia-Kane won third place in the poster competition.
Richard Grossman, professor of economics, presented a paper, co-authored with Chris Meissner (University of California at Davis), titled, “International Aspects of the Great Depression,” at a conference on Lessons from the 1930s Great Depression for the Making of Economic Policy, hosted by the British Academy in London on April 16-17. Grossman also served as a discussant for a paper on “The Political Lessons of Depression-Era Banking Reform.” Conference papers are available online.
Liana Woskie '10 believes that Community Health Workers (CHWs) can be effective and vital components of systems that serve the health needs of hard-to-reach populations. However, their success varies across cultures and program models. She wants to know why. As a 2010 Watson Fellow, Liana Woskie ’10 will research CHWs systems through case studies of programs located in Bangladesh, Tanzania, India, Thailand and Lesotho. Woskie, a College of Social Studies major, is one of only 40 students in the world to receive a Watson Fellowship this year.
