The fourth annual Middletown Day took place during Wesleyan’s Homecoming on Oct. 22. Middletown Day is an annual, family-friendly event that is open to the local community. Middletown residents are invited to come to campus and celebrate the various connections between Wesleyan and the Middletown area and cheer on the Cardinals in several athletic events. Guests were treated to popcorn, hotdogs, balloon creations and face paintings. The event was sponsored by the Jewett Center for Community Partnerships and University Relations. The Wesleyan Program House Outhouse hosted its 10th Annual Fall Fest on Oct. 14 to celebrate the season. Outhouse residents provided fall-related foods such as apple crisps, apple cider, pumpkin pie, squash and corn, and activities such as apple bobbing, donuts on string, a homemade ball pit, a pumpkin walk, live music and more. The event was funded by the Office of Student Activities and Leadership Development and the Wesleyan Green Fund. Outhouse serves as a base for the Wesleyan Outing Club. Wesleyan’s Freeman Asian Scholars gathered for group photos, a reception and dinner Oct. 7 at the Center for the Arts. The Wesleyan Freeman Asian Scholarship Program provides full-tuition toward a bachelor’s degree for up to 11 exceptional Asian students annually from the People’s Republic of China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam.

The College of the Environment hosted its annual Pumpkin Festival on Oct. 8 at the student-run Long Lane Organic Farm. Participants enjoyed free veggie burgers, apple cider, farm tours, live music, vendors, activities and crafts, face painting, tie-dying, letterboxing, paper making, up-cycling t-shirts and more. The Molecular Biophysics Program, the Department of Chemistry and the Department of Molecular Biology and Biochemistry hosted the 17th Annual Molecular Biophysics and Biological Chemistry Retreat on Sept. 29 at Wadsworth Mansion in Middletown. The event included several talks by Wesleyan faculty and two student research poster presentations. Professor Anna Pyle delivered the keynote address titled "Structural and Mechanistic Insights into RNA Splicing." Pyle is the Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator and the William Edward Gilbert Professor in the Departments of Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology and Chemistry at Yale University. Students enjoyed a late-night snack/early breakfast Sept. 24 at “Pancakes with Public Safety.” At midnight, Wesleyan’s Public Safety Officers ventured to Bennet Hall where they prepared a meal and spoke to students about safety issues on campus. “Students often see us as enforcement, so we want to have conversations with students so they see us in a different light,” said Public Safety Supervisor Lt. Fred West, who created the series of Residence Officer Programs in 2013. Past programs include “Pistachio Ice Cream with P-Safe” and “Pasta with P-Safe," whereas "Potatoes with P-Safe" may be next in line. (more…)
