Rachel Lindsay ’05, founder of Long Lane Farm, speaks on “Strengthening Sustainable Food Production in Nicaragua: From Theory to Practice” Sept. 9 on campus. Lindsay works for the NGO SosteNica to promote sustainable development in Nicaragua.
Dr. Alan Wright, president of SosteNica discusses how the organization promotes sustainable, economic, human and community development in Nicaragua.In order to demonstrate the metaphor that “Soste Nica is like a jumper cable” for Nicaragua, Dr. Wright asked everyone who had ever needed a jump to get their car started to raise their hands. He also asked the lecture’s attendees to turn to the person next to them and take one minute to explain their dreams and aspirations.Lindsay, who majored in anthropology at Wesleyan, read a quote from a Nicaraguan farmer she worked with about the importance of his land and why he did not want to sell it to a large corporate company. She explained how SosteNica integrates environmental and educational projects with financial services, creating a more holistic and long-term approach to the alleviation of poverty.
