Olivia DrakeOn Dec. 12, the Center for the Arts received a grant worth $136,585 from the Connecticut Commission on Culture and Tourism (CCCT) to support the Feet to the Fire initiative in 2011-12. The CCCT also awarded the CFA with an $11,000 award to support the Breaking Ground Dance Series in 2011-12.
Ron Jenkins, professor of theater, was featured in the Dec. 24 edition of the New York Times for his efforts teaching incarcerated men Dante’s “Inferno.” In the Dante Project, Jenkins leads a series of workshops that, through reading, analyzing, adapting and performing, explores the connections between Dante’s 14th-century epic poem and the lives of incarcerated men and women. Jenkins, who has taught in Wesleyan’s theater department for 11 years, introduced prison outreach into the curriculum in 2007, bringing Wesleyan students to the York Correctional Institution, a women’s prison in Niantic, to work with inmates on literary classics. Ellen Thomas, research professor of earth and environmental sciences, was elected as a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) in December. Thomas joins 502 other fellows from across the country. These individuals will be recognized for their contributions to science and technology at the Fellows Forum to be held Feb. 19 during the AAAS Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C. Thomas will receive a certificate and a blue and gold rosette as a symbol of her distinguished accomplishments.

Eric Gershon joined the Office of University Communications as an editor/new media writer on Nov. 22. David Jackson joined the Upward Bound Program as a program coordinator on Dec. 20.
Manju Hingorani, associate professor of molecular biology and biochemistry, and Jacob Bricca, adjunct assistant professor of film studies, explained their experimental cross-disciplinary course on science documentary filmmaking at Wesleyan in a December 2010 article published in American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB) Today. In the article, Hingorani and Bricca wrote about their course, "Making the Science Documentary," which they co-taught together, starting in 2007. The Gamma chapter of Phi Beta Kappa welcomed 15 seniors into the honor society Dec. 8 at the Office of Admission. The honorees are pictured above (two were absent). Fifteen graduating seniors were elected into the Gamma chapter of Phi Beta Kappa during a ceremony Dec. 8. PBK is the nation’s oldest academic honor society. Students elected to the society must have completed Stage I and II of the General Education Expectations by the end of the junior year and have a grade point average of 93 or above. (more…)
"Histories of Race" is the topic of the 9th annual Shasha Seminar for Human Concerns to be held April 8-10, 2011. During this weekend retreat, participants will examine the many histories of race, both past and present, with a group of internationally renowned scholars. The Shasha Seminar for Human Concerns, endowed by the generosity of James J.
