Robert D. Bullard, a leading authority regarding environmental justice and the author of Dumping in Dixie: Race, Class and Environmental Quality, led the Celebration of the Life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. keynote address Jan. 27 in Memorial Chapel.
Bullard is the Ware Distinguished Professor of Sociology and director of the Environmental Justice Resource Center at Clark Atlanta University. He has testified and served as an expert witness in dozens of civil rights cases over the past decade. He is the author of 14 books that address environmental justice, environmental racism, urban land use, facility permitting, community reinvestment, housing, transportation, suburban sprawl and smart growth.Sonia Mañjon, vice president for diversity and strategic partnerships, welcomed the audience to the Martin Luther King Jr. celebration. Wesleyan President Michael S. Roth introduced Bullard as the keynote speaker. Roadside Girls members Louise Brown, dean for academic advancement, dean for the Class of 2009; Gayle Pemberton, professor of English and African American studies, emerita; and Kari Weil, visiting professor of letters, sing during the event. Carolyn Ariori '09 led a personal reflection during the Dr. King celebration. She spoke about how the concept of a 'neighbor' is an inclusive - rather than an exclusive - idea.In July 2007, Bullard was featured in CNN's "People You Should Know."Attendees applaud Bullard's speech.
