Wesleyan University, The Hartford Courant and FOX CT presented a Key Issues Forum April 27 titled “The Person You Think You Know: Signs and Solutions of Campus Violence” in Beckham Hall. The forum’s panelists discussed relationship violence on campuses, including how to recognize danger signs and where to get help.
Sonia BasSheva Mañjon, vice president for diversity and strategic partnerships, welcomed the four panelists. Her office co-sponsored the event. Panelist Jaclyn Friedman ‘93, center, suggests that Wesleyan implement a campus policy that would require students to seek consent from each other before having sex. Friedman is co-editor of “Yes Means Yes! Visions of Female Sexual Power and a World Without Rape” and the director of Women, Action and the Media. To her right is panelist Connie Kirkland, director of sexual assault services at George Mason University, who is a and a national expert on campus stalking. Laurie Perez, reporter for FOX CT, pictured at left, moderated the event. At left, panelist Janet Peckinpaugh, a 30-year broadcast journalist with her own media marketing firm, spoke about her experiences as the victim of stalking and domestic violence as a young woman. At right is panelist Claire Potter, professor of American studies, professor of history, whose research interest includes the study of violence against women. Potter suggests that people positions of power need to tell rape victims that they have been victimized to help motivate them to report the crime. The panelists welcomed questions from the audience.
