Jessica Carso, managing director of the Green Street Arts Center, was named to The Hartford Business Journal’s “40 Under 40″ 2011 list. From more than 250 nominations for more than 160 individuals, the judges honed the list to the best and brightest.

The Hartford Business Journal has been selecting “40 Under 40” honorees for 15 years.

According to the Journal, “Among this year’s honorees, we have entrepreneurs and corporate executives, folks who work in nonprofits and folks who advise others on handling their profits. They all have achieved a level of success early in their careers, yet for each, the best is likely yet to come. You’ll see they share a passion for what they do, a willingness to expend the time and energy it takes to be the best, a zest for life and an appreciation for seeking a balance in their lives. They also share an uncommon commitment to giving back to their communities.”

Carso aims to make a difference and serve as an advocate for social change as managing director of the Green Street Arts Center.

“For the last five years, I have served as Green Street’s primary fundraiser, working to gain support for the university’s multi-disciplinary community arts center, ensuring access is given to all who want to participate in our arts education-based programming,” she says in her bio. “I hope to continue my work as a social change agent, a nonprofit leader and to serve as an example to others, that simply doing your best, contributing to society in any way you are able, will ensure a better world for everyone.”

Carso also volunteers for the Middlesex County Community Foundation. She currently serves as chair of the Fund for Women and Girls, advocating for and helping to raise necessary funds to support programs that empower Middlesex County women and girls to be self-reliant and reach their potential. In addition, she serves as co-chair for the foundation’s newest initiative, Live Local Give Local 365.

Carso says her biggest strength is being authentic. “I’ve learned that being my authentic and true self opens up countless opportunities. Being genuine allows me to build meaningful relationships, remain open to new learning opportunities, experiences and views, and helps me remain unafraid to ask questions.”

In December 2010, The Huffington Post named Carso the “Greatest Person of the Day.”
