MOOCs Can Be Enlightening, but They’re Not College
Andy Szegedy-Maszak discusses the value, limitations and future of massive open online courses
The Verge conducted an extensive interview with Andy Szegedy-Maszak, Jane A. Seney Professor of Greek, professor of classical studies, on the value and limitations of MOOCs, as well as Wesleyan’s future plans in online education. This year, Szegedy-Maszak taught a seven-week class on Coursera titled, “The Ancient Greeks.”
The author describes “The Ancient Greeks” as “fantastic…serious, fun, beautifully presented and engaging as anything,” yet she notes that without papers, grades or finals, it is hardly the same experience as taking a traditional college class.
