Since 2006, the Wesleyan Freecycle program has facilitated the opportunity for one person’s trash to become another person’s treasure. Through its own electronic mailing listserv, Freecycle encourages students, staff and faculty to exchange unwanted items, rather than throwing them away. Wesleyan’s program is part of the national Freecycle movement, where people give away things that they don’t need, or ask for items they do need. These items are free and recycled, hence the name Freecycle. On May 19, Wesleyan Adult Fitness finished its "Couch to 5K" fitness class. During the challenge, all participants successfully completed a 5K event at the Freeman Athletic Center outdoor track. "Eleven hard working, committed staff took on this personal challenge with the goal of building the endurance and strength necessary to safely complete a 5K event," said Heather Minetti, adult fitness coordinator. "Congratulations to this very dedicated group of staff." Participants included Tracey Stanley, Roseann Sillasen, Jennifer Enxuto, Nate Peters, Lisa LaPlant, Sherri Condon, Janice Watson, Mary Kelly, Renee Rasmussen, Beverly Hunter-Daniel, Michele Myers-Brown and Christine Daniels. The group began training in March.

The Administrators and Faculty of Color Alliance (AFCA) hosted a lunch for seniors of color May 19 at Daniel Family Commons. Students received stoles, which they may wear during the Commencement ceremony May 25. AFCA members Joanne Rafferty, associate director of Usdan University Center, and Antonio Farias, vice president for equity and inclusion, spoke to students during the luncheon. All Wesleyan alumni, students, parents, faculty, families and friends of the university are welcome to attend Reunion & Commencement Weekend May 22-25 on campus. The weekend is chocked-full of events including class reunions, WESeminars, academic department open houses, campus tours, an all-college picnic and festival, an All-Campus Party featuring mamarazzi and Illegalize, and the 182nd Commencement Ceremony led by commencement speaker Theodore Shaw '76. Wesleyan students presented “Texts.com Presents Shrak the Musical: the Musical” May 3 in WestCo Cafe. Nick Petrillo '14, Sky McGilligan '14, Keegan Dufty '14 and Liza Pine '14 wrote, directed and acted in the musical. Charlie Kaplan '14 directed the music and co-directed the show. Hilary Barth, associate professor of psychology, associate professor of neuroscience and behavior, is the co-author of of "Preschoolers trust novel members of accurate speakers’ groups and judge them favorably," published in the Quarterly Journal of Experimental Psychology, Issue 67, pages 872-883, in 2014. The paper is based on work from BA '08/MA '09 student Keera Bhandari's thesis, and research by former undergraduates Kyle MacDonald '10 and Jenn Garcia '10, and former lab manager Elizabeth Chase.
