How Science Helped Win D-Day

On the 70th anniversary of D-Day, Suzanne O’Connell, professor of earth and environmental sciences, faculty director of the McNair Program, writes in Slate about the role played by science in making possible the victory of Allied troops on the beaches of Normandy. 

“For any amphibious operation, an ability to predict the height and timing of high tides is crucial,” write O’Connell, yet adds, “Predicting tides correctly is not as simple as you might think. Having taught oceanography to undergrads for many years, I can testify to just how complex, even counterintuitive, this science is.”
