The Center for the Arts received two grants from the National Endowment for the Arts for the 2012-13 academic year. A $34,000 grant will support the CFA's Institute for Curatorial Practice in Performance. Founded in 2010, the Institute for Curatorial Practice in Performance (ICPP) brings together artists, curators, scholars, presenters and cultural leaders to encourage innovative and relevant curatorial approaches to presenting time-based art. Another grant, worth $20,000, will support the presentation of dance artists.

The Center for the Arts received a $10,000 grant from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation on April 23. The award will support "Continuing Innovation" for the CFA's Feet to the Fire project. The mission of the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation is to improve the quality of people's lives through grants supporting the performing arts, environmental conservation, medical research and the prevention of child abuse, and through preservation of the cultural and environmental legacy of Dorks Duke's properties.

For 40 years, Alvin Lucier, the John Spencer Camp Professor of Music, emeritus, has pioneered music composition and performance, including the notation of performers’ physical gestures, the use of brain waves in live performance, the generation of visual imagery by sound in vibrating media, and the evocation of room acoustics for musical purposes. On Nov. 4-6, the Music Department and Center for the Arts celebrated Lucier’s remarkable musical career and contributions. Lucier retired in June 2010. Photos of the event are below. Wesleyan's Center for the Arts received a grant worth $20,000 from the National Endowment for the Arts. The funds will support the 2012-13 Breaking Ground Dance Series. The NEA is supporting 863 organizations and individual writers across the country with grant funds. The CFA is the only dance presenter in Connecticut to receive support. The Breaking Ground Dance Series at the Center for the Arts, now in its 12th season, features cutting-edge choreography, world-renowned companies, and companies pushing the boundaries of the art form. Pam Tatge, director of the Center for the Arts, received a $600 grant from the Middletown Commission on the Arts (MCA) to support the Arts Walk at Riverview Plaza this summer. Arts Walk was a pilot program of the Middletown Commission on the Arts to host arts activities at Riverview Plaza as a way to attract people to visit downtown Middletown on weekends in the summer.  The Center for the Arts and Center for Creative Youth used the funds to provide performances/activities for people who passed by the plaza.

Wesleyan will present two traveling exhibits this fall. The Davison Art Center gallery will host Excavations: The Prints of Julie Mehretu, Sept. 16-Dec. 11. Mehretu is best known for her large-scale paintings and drawings, which layer maps, urban planning grids and architectural renderings with whorls of abstract markings and bright shapes of color. This the first-ever comprehensive exhibition of prints produced by the artist thus far in her career. A gallery talk is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Oct. 5 with Cole Rogers, artistic director and Master Printer at the Highpoint Center for Printmaking. Rogers will speak on his experience working with…
