Wesleyan’s non-commercial college and community radio station, 88.1FM WESU, is holding its 10th annual WESU Holiday Pledge Drive.

WESU is a constant source of diverse music, provocative public affairs, and creative free-form programming that has engaged countless curious and discerning listeners for more than seven decades. The station is currently celebrating its 75th year of operation.

Community support during this pledge drive supports locally produced free-form radio created by student and community volunteers. Currently, WESU operates 24 hours per day, seven days per week, and is supported by a volunteer staff of over 150 student and community volunteers, one part-time paid staffer, and one full-time general manager.

The 2014 drive will specifically target much-needed studio upgrades.

WESU offers a unique mix of public affairs and cultural programming that reflects the diversity of the communities that it serves. In addition to bringing listeners hard to access perspectives from across the world, WESU enables local communities to organize, educate and connect with the world around them. With growth in Internet broadcasting, WESU is able to serve thousands of listeners from around the globe each month.

General Manager Ben Michael asks supporters to think about the countless listeners and volunteers who find value and meaning in the power of community radio.

“As we celebrate this 75th anniversary, please reflect on the impact of WESU in your life. Consider a world without the influence of student-owned-and -operated radio,” he said. “How many successful bands and artists in mainstream media would have made it big without airplay by stations like WESU? Please help us honor this legacy by renewing your support during our annual Winter Holiday Pledge Drive.”
