All NewsSnapshotsStudentsPIE Conference Teaches Underrepresented Students about Research Prospects in Academia Benjamin TraversApril 2, 20193minThe Office of Equity and Inclusion hosted the second annual Pathways to Inclusive Education (PIE) Conference March 30 in Beckham Hall. The conference focused on the topic of “Navigating Your Journey through Research.” Pathways to Inclusive Education is a collective of cohort programs whose purpose is to remove obstacles along the pathways to secondary and postsecondary education who come from historically underrepresented backgrounds. Participants frequently asked questions during the conference. Steven Townsend, assistant professor of chemistry at Vanderbilt University, delivered the keynote address. The event also included two workshops on “research basics” and “career development.” Discussions focused on what underrepresented and marginalized students need to know about research and the prospects it offers in academia and professional environments.
