Erica L. Ball ’93 is a historian and the Mary Jane Hewitt Department Chair in Black Studies at Occidental College, who specializes in 19th and 20th-century African American history. Her second book, Madam C.J. Walker: The Making of an American Icon (Rowman & Littlefield, 2021), tells the life story of one of the most influential women in American history. The month of February marked the campus-wide celebration of Black History Month. Hosted by Ujamaa, Wesleyan's Black Student Union, students took part in a plethora of events that celebrated black life, experiences and culture. This year events centered around the theme, "Freedom is a Constant Struggle," highlighting the many years of oppression people of color faced in the United States.
