Schumann Institute of the College of the Environment (COE) with a reception, remarks, and keynote speakers. The event was held at the Fries Center for Global Studies in Fisk Hall. The Robert F. Schumann Institute was established in July 2017 with a $2.5M gift from The Robert F. Schumann [’44] Foundation. Pictured, from left is Timothy Crowley, a foundation trustee, and Robert F. Schumann Professor of Environmental Studies Barry Chernoff (center), speaks with David and Ford Schumann during the reception. The Institute works to integrate approaches to learning, research, and communication about environmental issues in ways that extend the COE’s educational programs within and beyond Wesleyan. Special emphasis is given to the areas of civic engagement, global studies, food, and the arts. Chernoff (at the podium) said he looks forward to the Institute facilitating collaborations with the Center for Global Studies, the Allbritton Center, the College of Integrative Sciences, the Center for the Arts, the Quantitative Analysis Center, and African American studies. Keynote speaker Danielle Pruitt ’15 is founder of Oh, Buy the Way, a socially conscious e-commerce company focused on environmental products. Keynote speaker Jennifer Roach ’14 is cofounder of Summer of Solutions Hartford, a food justice and youth leadership development program in Hartford, Conn. Wesleyan President Michael Roth listens to Roach’s address. Keynote speaker Evan Weber ’13 is cofounder of Sunrise Movement, a group of young people working to stop climate change and create millions of jobs in the process.
