WesMaSS is a two-year program that begins the summer immediately prior to a student’s first year at Wesleyan. President Roth welcomed questions from the students and spoke about his own educational experience. Wesleyan potentially excepts up to 30 WesMaSS scholars a year. Over the two academic years, scholars participate in a variety of workshops and activities aimed at building relationships with faculty and peers. Through mentoring, skill building, and continued reflection, Scholars continue to develop the habits necessary to become successful science students and scholars. The program, which is designed especially to broaden access to the sciences and math for all students, and introduce them to the rigors of college level work, is the result of a partnership among Academic Affairs, Student Affairs and the Office of Equity and Inclusion. It is directed by David Westmoreland, associate professor of chemistry (pictured). The program culminates at the end of the sophomore year with opportunities to apply for an on-campus research fellowship during the summer.
