Alumni joined students, faculty, staff, and friends for Wesleyan's Homecoming celebration Oct. 19–20. This year, Wesleyan athletics took on Little Three rival Amherst College. Football lost 33–3; women's soccer won 3–2; men's soccer lost 3–0; and women's field hockey lost 3–0. On May 4, Wesleyan Baseball Coach Mark Woodworth ’94 inducted six new members into the Wesleyan Baseball Wall of Fame. Also inducted was a historical class of eight alums who graduated between 1866 and 1931 who were instrumental in the early years of the program. This year, a new brick backstop was built not only for the field, but to serve as an actual “Wall” for the Wall of Fame. (more…)

Former men's head basketball coach Herb Kenny will be inducted to the Middletown Sports Hall of Fame on Jan. 26. The Middletown Sports Hall of Fame and Museum was created to honor the numerous outstanding athletes and other sports-minded individuals, and to preserve the deep and rich history of sports in the life of the City of Middletown. Kenny, an adjunct professor of physical education, emeritus, coached the Cardinals from 1968-1995 and ended his career with a 312-280 record. On May 5, the Daniel Family Common was the site for the 2016 induction into the Baseball Wall of Fame. Seven alumni, ranging in class years from 1959 to 2000 were there with family and friends to reminisce about their outstanding Wesleyan baseball careers, as well as celebrate the program for what it is accomplishing currently. Michael Whalen '83, who returned to his alma mater as head football coach and associate athletics director in 2010, has stepped down as head football coach, effective Feb. 1, to devote his full attention to his post as athletics director. He assumed that position in July 2012. John Biddiscombe, in his 37th year at Wesleyan and 24th as its athletics director, will be one of 12 individuals along with one team inducted into the Middletown Sports Hall of Fame on Jan 26. Biddiscombe came to Wesleyan in 1974 as a three-sport coach of football, wrestling and track and field. He was head coach of wrestling from 1974 to 1989 with a won-loss record of 128-85-3, and in 1984 the team won the New England championship. Kate Mullen, who recently completed her 19th year in charge of the Wesleyan University women's basketball team, was inducted into the Connecticut Women's Basketball Hall of Fame at its 24th annual induction ceremony April 13. Coach Mullen was honored as one of seven inductees. She was the only individual inducted as a college coach. Two others were honored as high school players, one as a high school coach, one as a college player, one as a referee and another in the honorary area. Gale Lackey, in her 33rd year of coaching at Wesleyan, and her 26th season at the helm of the women's volleyball Cardinals, will be inducted into the Connecticut Women's Volleyball Hall of Fame during its 13th annual induction ceremony Tuesday, Nov. 23. The ceremony will take place at the Aqua Turf Country Club in Southington, Conn. In total, six individuals will be enshrined this year, bringing the total in the CWVHOF up to 80. Rick McCarthy, who recently completed his fifth season as an assistant coach for Wesleyan's highly successful men's lacrosse team, was one of seven individuals inducted into the Connecticut Lacrosse Hall of Fame during a ceremony Jan. 10 at Yale University. Serving as the head coach of the men's lacrosse team at Western Connecticut State U. for the 2004 and 2005 seasons, McCarthy came back to join the Wesleyan staff in 2006 after serving in that capacity during the 2003 campaign. Rich Langer, store assistant at the Cardinal Technology Center, will be inducted into the Regional School District 17 (Haddam and Killingworth, Conn.) Hall of Fame 2009 May 30. The Hall of Fame was formed to honor the contributions made by coaches, former student athletes and others to the various athletic programs offered as a part of the Regional School District 17 schools. The Hall of Fame Class of 2009 will recognize the Langer's volleyball coaching career.

Despite graduating from Wesleyan with degrees in fields such as economics or psychology, several Wes alumni went on to pursue jobs in sports and athletics. While some became professional athletes on nationally-recognized teams, others delved into coaching, refereeing, sports reporting, and team management.
