Nadya Potemkina, adjunct assistant professor of music, led a musical lesson for students of the Green Street Teaching and Learning Center’s After School program on April 4.
In line with Green Street’s mission to offer kids a safe space to build self-esteem, problem solving skills, and act upon their blossoming curiosities by providing a diverse group of role models to work with them, Potemkina’s program allowed the children to tap into their creative banks and explore the power of music.For many of the students, it was their first introduction to music theory and the complex layers of participation involved in creating an ensemble. The children began by learning about basic note values, such as the difference between a whole note and a half note, then moved into practicing rhythmic pattern exchanges, and ended by performing together as a percussion band.
