This summer, crews around campus are hard at work on several major maintenance and capital projects designed to support Wesleyan’s ultimate goal of creating a more interconnected and sustainable campus.

This July, Wesleyan's 2015 Summer Film Series presents "Hollywood Icons: Jimmy Stewart," a four-film series sponsored by Wesleyan's College of Film and the Moving Image (CFILM). Films will be shown at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesdays in July at the Center for Film Studies. All films are free and open to the public and will be preceded by an introduction by Marc Longenecker, CFILM's programming and technical director. The "Hollywood Icons: Jimmy Stewart" film series includes Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (July 7), Harvey (July 14), Rear Window (July 21), and Winchester '73 (July 28). The Wesleyan Writers Conference celebrated its 59th year by welcoming more than 60 new and seasoned writers and others interested in the writer’s craft to the Wesleyan campus June 10-14. Headed by Wesleyan Writers Conference Director Anne Greene, adjunct professor of English and director of Writing Programs, the conference featured seminars, workshops, readings, panel discussions and manuscript consultations led by Wesleyan faculty and other nationally known writers, editors and agents. George Matthew Jr., who earned a Certificate of Advanced Study in ethnomusicology from Wesleyan in 1980, returned to campus on June 11 to play Wesleyan’s 24-bell carillon atop of South College. “Now I’ve played all 11 carillons in Connecticut,” he said.

Fifth graders from Snow Elementary School in Middletown toured Wesleyan’s astronomy, biology, chemistry, and physics departments on June 8. (more…)

The Office of Human Resources reported the following new hires, transitions and departures for April and May 2015: Newly hired Kyle Archer was hired as an assistant football coach, quarterbacks and passing game on April 1. On May 29, pre-frosh Max Wimer ’19 swam laps for 60 minutes to raise money for children affected by the April 25 Nepal magnitude-7.8 earthquake that killed more than 8,000 people and injured an additional 23,000. The event, titled "Swim for Nepal," was part of the Save the Children Fund non-profit group that promotes children's rights, provides relief and helps support children in developing countries. More than $37,000 was donated, with Wimer as one of the fundraisers, collecting $2,175. With the first official cohort of students following a three-year path a BA having graduating this spring, The Chronicle of Higher Education checked in on the program, which was first announced in 2012. Fifteen of Wesleyan's 799 graduates last month finished their degrees in six semesters. While a few students have always graduated early, the university announced in 2012 that it would provide support for students who wanted graduate in three years, which could reduce the price of a degree by about 20 percent.
